How much exercise should you do every day?
Spring Chicken’s GP Dr Rob Hicks gives his advice
Ideally as much as you can manage comfortably, and fit into the day. Expert recommendations currently suggest at least 150 minutes a week of moderately intensive aerobic activity such as brisk walking or cycling. This can be made up of varying periods of times – one example being 30 minutes a day on five days of the week. Each period of exercise should be at least 10 minutes – so the 30 minutes can be achieved by doing three 10-minute sessions. An alternative is to do at least 75 minutes a week of vigorous exercise such as running or swimming. In addition, muscle-strengthening exercises – such as lifting weights – on at least two days a week is advised.
